Mug up for Achill
We are currently attending VTOS, Achill and we are doing a survey by way of questionnaire to establish if there is a willingness to help reduce litter and promote an environmentally friendly island.
We are sure that you will agree that there is a need to reduce the amount of disposable coffee cups strewn across the island.
Millions of people begin their day with a piping hot cup of tea/coffee. There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with this practice but if you look deeper you will see the catastrophe.
The plastic used in coffee cup lids is polystyrene or Styrofoam. It is both carcinogenic and a neurotoxin, especially when heated. It is NOT recyclable or biodegradable.
Because of regulations paper cups must be made of non-recyclable materials i.e. new trees have to be cut down to make them (20 million trees annually).
There are 1 million cups sent to land-fill every minute.
For every cup produced ¼ lbs (113 g) of CO2 is released into the atmosphere.
We would like to promote an initiative whereby retailers of hot beverages in disposable mugs would participate in the “Bring Your Own Mug” initiative, whereby customers can use their own mugs and therefore reduce litter.
This will simply involve placing a sticker and/or poster in your premises window, similar to image below, which VTOS Achill provide. As a participant of this initiative the logo will be available to you digitally for use in social media. The initiative will also be promoted by provincial newspapers, radio and social media.
We would be grateful if you would complete the survey below.
